Same corner since 1953

The building at 2906 Spring Hill Avenue went up in the 1950s and opened as Mack's Bar-B-Q Drive-In. The family's own drawing of the old drive-in shows the Mack's sign out front and window signs for Steer Burgers, steaks, hot dogs and hickory-smoked pit bar-b-q. The roadside sign today still reads "Since 1953."

Roshell started working at Mack's in 1974 and married into the Flowers family. In 1989 she and her husband took over the diner and put her name on it, and Roshell Flowers still owns it today. The family says it has been feeding people on this corner of Spring Hill Avenue since the 1920s.

The menu still carries the Mack name: Mr. Mack's original chili goes on the Chili Cheese Steer and the hot dogs, and the three-patty Mack Attack is the biggest burger on the board.

Pull up a stool at the counter

Burgers are hand-pattied and cooked on the flat-top right in front of the counter. Longhorn horns hang over the grill, booths line the windows and there is a back dining room with TVs for larger groups and game days.

Open weekdays, breakfast through supper

Breakfast off the griddle from 6 AM, then Steers, plate lunches and fried seafood until 8 PM. Closed weekends.
